- ‘Super’ Simon Evans takes both Sunday victories for Team Asia New Zealand
- Evans closes the eTROPHY title gap with Jimenez to 8 points with two races remaining
- Fahad Algosaibi is the eTROPHY PRO‑AM champion with a clean sweep of victories in Berlin
- Reverse Grid and optional ATTACK MODE in round 8 adds further spice to the electric touring car series
‘Super Sunday’ delivered the goods at Berlin’s Tempelhof circuit today with two thrilling Jaguar I‑PACE eTROPHY races. Title challenger Simon Evans secured both wins for Team Asia New Zealand to close the gap on the lead of the series.
The first of the double‑header races saw Simon Evans start P4 after a tricky qualifying on Saturday. The Kiwi showed lightning pace throughout the whole race. A well‑timed use of ATTACK MODE proved to be the deciding factor in the closest ever eTROPHY finish just a tenth of a second ahead of ZEG iCarros Jaguar Brazil driver, Sergio Jimenez. Brazilian team‑mate Cacá Bueno showed further consistency with another podium at Tempelhof.
Alice Powell, in her Jaguar ran racing Team Germany I‑PACE put in a strong performance to finish P5 as did fellow W Series and VIP driver Abbie Eaton who secured P6 following a great start and a race‑long battle with fastest lap Frenchman, Gregory Segers.
The ‘Reverse Grid’ race saw the fastest drivers start at the back. PRO‑AM racer Paul Spooner put in a spirited performance to lead the race before the chasing pack closed in. Title rivals Simon and Sérgio picked off their rivals and were soon at the sharp end of the grid. In a familiar pattern the Brazilian was leading with just a few laps to go but the New Zealand driver Evans chose to use his optional ATTACK MODE to his advantage to take his second win of the day. With two races remaining in the second season of eTROPHY it is too close to call between Jimenez and Evans.
Saudi Racing driver Fahad Algosaibi put in another faultless performance in the PRO‑AM category. A clean sweep of Berlin victories has crowned him champion elect with two races remaining – a truly impressive performance from the 27‑year‑old Saudi Arabian racer who celebrated with a head stand on the podium!
The world’s first all‑electric touring car series will conclude with two races on 12 and 13 August with another new Tempelhof track layout in what is set to be a thrilling ‘Lockdown Showdown.’
Simon’s super Sunday isn’t it. I had to just push on that was my goal. I’ve done a few of these reverse grids back home in New Zealand and the biggest thing is surviving the first lap. I’m really glad Sérgio took that optional third ATTACK MODE, that set me up and I just tried to pull out a qualifier even though the tyres were stinking hot and I managed to get right on top of him. I’m absolutely over the moon to win from the back of the grid. I have treated each day as it comes. I phoned my Dad this morning back home and he said you can make it work – there’s many more races. My Dad has always been so honest with Mitch and I but first he makes us be honest with ourselves. I plan to relax tomorrow and be ready for another track change on Wednesday.

I can't explain how happy I am right now to have won the Jaguar I‑PACE eTROPHY PRO‑AM category on Super Sunday. The reverse grid was such a fun race, we had so much tight racing that I almost lost myself in the race and wasn't really thinking about the championship. But when I got out of the car, I realised we had enough of a gap that I had won the series in my class. I'm just so happy right now.

Good pace now from Simon but I improved a little bit. Simon took advantage of my ATTACK MODE move. I was in the front and opened the gap but Simon has more pace in the straights making his life easier and he is driving very well. Reverse grid is nice ‑ I like it. It can happen again.

Of course I have to help Sérgio now but I don’t think he needs me. I tried to do my best but Evans and Sérgio made the best of ATTACK MODE. This is my 5th podium and I might need to buy another bag to carry home my trophies. I started 3rd from the back then I started bumping into everyone and lost straight speed. I managed my ATTACK MODE well. I am happy – not super happy but I am on the podium.

A fantastic finish to an exciting weekend of eTROPHY racing. Firstly congratulations to Fahad – five wins in a row in Berlin, the PRO‑AM title and a unique podium celebration – well done to him and Saudi Racing. His team‑mate Paul did a fantastic job to stay at the front of the Reverse Grid race but eventually came under pressure from the front runners. Sérgio’s run from the back of the grid is what we have come to expect from him. It was great to see Simon hunt him down and use ATTACK MODE to take his second victory on the last lap. Everyone is looking forward to two quieter days to re‑prepare the cars and then we go again with the two finale races.
