Panasonic Jaguar Racing Team Director James Barclay reacts to new London E-Prix announcement

5 March 2019

The announcement of a new London ABB FIA Formula E race in 2020 is ‘exciting news’ for Panasonic Jaguar Racing Team Director James Barclay and the team will ‘relish the opportunity’ when the race comes to the British capital.

London E-Prix

It was announced on Tuesday 5 March that a London race will be added to the race calendar for season six. Formula E returns to the British capital – after racing here in seasons one and two – at an exciting new venue at the ExCeL arena in east London, subject to the approval of the FIA World Motor Sport Council.

Everyone at Jaguar Racing welcomes the return of London to the Formula E calendar. As the UK’s largest automotive manufacturer, with a heritage in motorsport, a race in the capital will be a real highlight next season and exciting news for all British motorsport fans.

London E-Prix

Jaguar Racing entered Formula E as the first premium manufacturer in the series with a mission to take our learnings from the race track back to the road. Electrification is a key part of Jaguar’s future and the technological innovations being made through Panasonic Jaguar Racing are proving invaluable. Using Formula E, we launched the Jaguar I‑PACE as our first battery electric vehicle ahead of our premium rivals and we are all proud that the I‑PACE has just been announced as European Car of the Year 2019.

Season 5, Mexico City E-Prix

London has a history of staging global sporting events and the UK capital re‑joins other global cities on the Formula E calendar to showcase the benefits and performance of the latest battery electric vehicle technologies. Importantly having a London race will also give our employees the opportunity to see Jaguar race against our competitors on home soil. We relish the opportunity to put on a great show next season.

The Hong Kong E‑Prix takes place on 10 March and will be the first race to be broadcast live on BBC2.

ABOUT PANASONIC JAGUAR RACING

Jaguar returned to racing in October 2016, becoming the first premium manufacturer to join the all‑electric ABB FIA Formula E Championship street racing series.

Jaguar’s Formula E programme will create tangible R&D benefits for the electrification of future Jaguar and Land Rover road cars and is designed around the team’s founding principle, ‘Race to Innovate’.

Manufacturers can design their own powertrain, which includes the motor, transmission, inverter and rear suspension. Common components across all teams to control costs include the carbon fibre chassis and battery. The focus is on developing electric vehicle powertrains.

ABB Formula E unveiled earlier this year the Generation 2 racecars. Teams will now have one racecar per driver, and no longer be required to make the mandatory car swap.

Beyond its all‑electric concept, Formula E is unique in the world of motorsport for its choice of venues. The championship takes place on temporary street circuits in the centre of the world’s major cities including Riyadh, Hong Kong, Sanya, Monaco, Rome, Paris and ending in a double‑header weekend in New York.
